Admission procedures – Hesketh King Treatment Centre Referral Process

  • Referrals are accepted only through registered social workers.
  • Where possible, applicants are interviewed and assessed prior to admission.
  • Pre-admission counselling by the referring social worker serves as motivational preparation for treatment.
  • Admission criteria, policy, and available admission times are communicated to referral agencies and the public.
  • Upon programme completion, patients are referred back to their external social worker for aftercare.

Accessibility

  • Entry dates and times are flexible.
  • Admissions are prioritised according to clinical indicators such as urgency, risk, and impact on patients, families, and communities.

Admission Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Male, 19 years and older.
  • Diagnosed with acute or chronic alcohol/drug dependency.
  • Resident of the Western Cape Province (for Department of Social Development subsidised beds).
  • Family support: parents/family must commit to regular visits and participation in the family programme (except where distance prevents this).
  • Self-motivated to pursue a substance-free lifestyle.
  • Psychiatrically stable; applicants on medication must supply enough for the full 9-week programme, with a valid prescription.
  • Cognitively and emotionally able to benefit from the programme.
  • Free from conflicting obligations (e.g. court cases) during the 9-week stay.

Exclusion Criteria

Applicants will not be admitted if:

  • Substance abuse is not the primary issue (psychiatric/medical issues must be treated first).
  • Physical assistance with daily living is required.
  • They are acutely psychotic, suicidal, or not detoxified from heroin/alcohol.
  • Constant supervision is necessary for safety.

Screening & Assessment

  • Only applicants who meet criteria through pre-admission screening will be admitted.
  • Assessment includes:
    • Substance use history and timeframe.
    • Psychiatric observation (DSM-V or ICD-11).
    • Intoxication status and need for detoxification.
    • Brief social history and needs assessment.
  • Application documents are reviewed by the Case Manager and Medical Department.
  • Motivated applicants who qualify are placed on a waiting list.
  • The Admissions Officer then arranges an assessment date with the applicant, social worker, family member, or court.

Assessment Interview Objectives

  • Confirm programme suitability for the applicant’s needs.
  • Assess willingness, readiness, and motivation for treatment.
  • Introduce the applicant and family to the programme.
  • Provide education about substance abuse.
  • Clarify family and programme expectations.
  • Establish communication channels and prepare the applicant for therapy.

Applicants who meet requirements may be admitted on the same day for the full 9-week inpatient programme.


Required Documentation

]To initiate admission, the following must be submitted to the Admissions Officer:

  • Comprehensive Psychosocial Report (Admission Form) by a registered social worker.
  • Individual Development Plan (IDP) by the external social worker.
  • Medical certificate and dental form by a medical professional.
  • Psychiatric report confirming stability if a pyschiatric diagnosis has been confirmed.
  • R1200 non-refundable patient contribution fee.

Admission Day

  • Applicants must arrive at 09h00 with items listed in the “What to Bring” document.
  • On arrival:
    • Medical testing for alcohol and drugs is conducted.
    • Admission forms must be completed by the applicant and one family member/significant other:
      • Admission contract.
      • Patient Data Form.
      • Dismissal and Criminal Offences Policy.
      • SACENDU (MRE) statistical form.
  • Personal belongings will be searched for prohibited items (e.g., substances, weapons). Any found will be confiscated. Discovery of such items after family/significant others have left may result in immediate dismissal.

Early Discharge or Refusal of Treatment

If a patient signs a Refusal of Treatment (ROT) form or is discharged for disciplinary reasons:

  • Family/significant others must collect the patient during normal working hours (unless alternative arrangements are made).
  • If the patient is not collected, he will be transported to Klapmuts SAPD Station for collection.
